Reader’s question: How do I create more interest and excitement in my outfits?
1. Add Accessories
Accessories really make a difference to your outfit.
- They take it from plain to interesting.
- They add personality.
- They add excitement.
You want to wear them. Don’t be scared, nobody died from accessorizing. In fact, what most people discover is that when they accessorize more, they get more compliments.
They don’t need to be expensive. There is so much great costume jewellery available now. Just avoid the stuff that looks really cheap. From wood to glass, from metals to leather there are so many different materials that you can make jewellery from. Check out my handy guide on choosing necklaces for your neckline.
How about a scarf? There are so many ways to tie them. Wear it as a belt, around your head or around your neck.
Belts are another accessory – they can be coloured or neutral, wide or narrow, have a feature buckle or a discreet one.
2. Be Bold with Colour
Get out of the neutral lane and play with colour.
You can mix different colours together or go monochromatic using just one colour at a time.
Look at nature for inspiring colour schemes to copy.
Dresses featured above are both from Verily
3. Wear a Hero
All basics is boring. Make sure you add a feature or hero garment or accessory. It may be amazing shoes, or a pattern that stands out. It could be with a statement necklace or a bold colour. Avoid bland.
4. Play with Prints
Don’t be scared of prints and patterns.
Your print personality may run more to the solids, but why not try a stripe instead?
You can wear one print at a time or mix them if you have an edgy or creative streak.
5. Create Interest with Texture
Just as interior designers and decorators love layering textures in a room, why not layer together different textures in your outfits. There are so many textures, smooth, nubbly, suede, sheer – play with them in your outfits..

Brilliant!
Thanks Lisa – that means a lot from you!
That black and white bolero is gorgeous. I am wondering if I can play with some little lace shawls I forgot I owned in a similar fashion. Love that hero piece! Thanks for the inspiration 🙂
Thanks for linking up to Top of the World Style. I love the blue dress.
Thanks so much Nicole!
I think my favorite is “Wear a Hero!” Well, for one that outfit just is amazing. The top is so cool. Plus, I love just highlighting really cool art/pictures/graphic tees. Sometimes I feel when our clothing says something it must be important. When our clothing says something it’s saying something about ourselves. I’m getting overly philosophical, but it’s just my two bits. Maybe that’s why I love graphic tees so much. Hahah, I don’t know.

Thanks so much Ann – I love that Picasso piece – I found it in a consignment store – it’s vintage and so unique. So what does it say about me?
