Have you ever stood in front of your wardrobe, feeling overwhelmed by the plethora of choices yet struggling to piece together an outfit that resonates with your style? If so, you’re not alone. Many of us face this sartorial challenge, but fear not, for the secret to creating a versatile and cohesive wardrobe might be simpler than you think.
The Power of Colour Analysis
As an image consultant, one key principle I always emphasize is the importance of colour. This is because when you embrace the palette of colours that enhance your own colouring, not only will you look more vibrant and healthy, but you’ll find that the clothes you buy and wear, mix easily together which makes for more outfits from fewer clothing. So, the first step towards a versatile wardrobe is understanding and embracing your unique colour palette. As I say in the video, “Colour is the first thing to consider and then it’s picking some colours that are inherent in you.” This means delving into your signature colours – those that naturally complement your skin tone, eye colour, and hair. These hues inherently work with you, making it effortless to create diverse outfits.
“What colour analysis does is it gives you a palette of colours that automatically work together… that creates versatility.”
Embracing Your Signature Colours
Your signature colours are a reflection of you. They resonate with your natural features, from the colour of your hair to the subtle hues in your eyes. These colours not only enhance your natural beauty but also offer a foundation for a wardrobe that is uniquely yours.
“Think about those signature colours because they all work naturally with you already.” This means they are some of your very best colours, your knockout colours that will always work with you and make you shine. You’ll find they also mix and match seamlessly as well, and naturally create your ideal levels of contrast (if you don’t know about contrast and your colours, find out more about it here).
For example, here I’ve repeated my hair colour (silver) in my shoes, which creates balance in my outfit. Plus the blues in my outfit all harmonise and are a signature colour with my eyes.
Coordination Beyond Colours
Versatility in fashion isn’t solely about colours. It also involves understanding the level of refinement in your clothes. As I mentioned in the video, mixing clothes with similar levels of refinement is key. For instance, pairing formal wear with leisure wear can create a discordant look, while smart casual items usually blend harmoniously.
When you’re choosing which items in your wardrobe to put together in an outfit, remember this: “We can’t really mix formal clothes with outdoor leisure; they just don’t work together too well.”
So instead fill your wardrobe with more clothing that is smarter, as you can always dress it down with more casual items, then dress it up with more formal. This results in maximum versatility, and when paired with a palette of colours that work together you get so much more bang for your buck.
The Principle of Volume and Visual Grouping
Another golden tip is the principle of volume. It’s one of our essential principles of coordination and recommends pairing one voluminous garment with a more fitted one.
Additionally, visual grouping or ‘sandwich dressing’ as it’s known on TikTok can add a unique touch to your outfit. This involves matching colours at opposite ends (like your top and shoes or even just hair and shoes) with a contrasting colour in between.
Here’s a simple sandwich I created by repeating the green in my shoes with the green in the cami with the denim sandwiched in between.
Where to From Here?
Creating a versatile wardrobe is not about owning countless items but about making smart choices and having the right clothes that work in harmony with you. By understanding your unique colour palette, embracing your signature colours, and learning the art of coordination, you build a wardrobe that is not only versatile but also a true reflection of your personal style. Remember, fashion is not just about clothing; it’s about expressing your unique identity with confidence and grace. When you dress in a way that feels like the best version of you, no matter the occasion, whether it’s casual or more formal, you feel more confident.
