Should you throw out that garment or keep it?
Here in this video Jill Chivers of 16 Style Types and I discuss one of the most important questions that you should ask yourself when doing a wardrobe cull before making a decision to bin it (and you can get some more tips here on keep or throw out).
You will read and hear lots of advice that if you haven’t worn a garment in the past 6 months/1 year/2 years etc. that you should just turf the item. But we want to delve more deeply and to really understand if that is the right advice for you? As you don’t want to turf it to discover shortly afterwards that you wish you hadn’t and you can’t replace it easily!

So ask yourself…
Can you imagine wearing it again?
Often garments that have been favourites in the past, stay in your wardrobe unworn (they hold lots of good memories). But maybe you can’t actually imagine wearing them again. They are from a previous time in your life and you have moved on. So get rid of it.
Or
You can imagine wearing it again and the thought of wearing it again makes you feel good inside. Then this is something you should be keeping as most likely you would regret throwing it away.
Watch the video and learn more about how powerful this question is and why it’s super important to ask it when you’re doing that next wardrobe cull.

9 Truths about working wardrobes

I have always been glad that I hang onto my cocktail and evening dresses! I have had only one or two years where I didn’t need several since I socialize with the same groups of people. Even if I skip a year, one of my friends usually borrows a couple and buying for just one event seems silly.
Another great discussion! Planning future events keeps all of us going! And we need items in our wardrobes to make them happen.
I hang on to everything and am totally against the 6 month rule… if I did I would not have my own vintage 😉
As a constant closet editor I can say that it’s easier when you edit often. I cannot imagine editing the closet like friends of mine who sit down and fill up 2 garbage bags in 10 minutes. For me its a process that avoids future regrets.
great!
