Did you know that there is a shoe colour that will work with all your outfits?
If you’re like many women who don’t want (can’t afford, or just don’t have the space for) an Imelda Marcos shoe wardrobe with thousands of shoes in every colour and style, then finding your ideal shoe colour will really cut down on the number of pairs you need to own to go with all your different coloured outfits.
What is your ideal shoe colour?
It’s in a colour that matches your hair colour. It doesn’t have to match exactly, but be in the same family and look similar enough that it relates well to the colour of your hair as this creates a visual loop, where the eye travels from the face to the feet and then back up as we group that same colour together mentally.
So when I had black hair, black was my best shoe colours.
Then when I went blonde it became a light cool beige.
Now that I’m grey, grey has become my new most versatile shoe colour, as it creates harmony and balance with my hair.
This was why I was keen to find a pair of grey boots for winter and was delighted to find these Hush Puppies Superb in Light Grey (FYI they also come in blonde, tan and black for all your blondes, redheads and dark brunettes) that fit my criteria for a comfortable everyday boot in a colour that would work well with my new silver hair. They’ve already proved to be super comfortable and versatile as I’ve worn them with a few different outfits already.
Your “hair colour shoe” is ideal for a pair of summer sandals, as well as a winter boot. It’s particularly great to have a hair colour shoe to wear with your skirts and dresses, no need to match the colour of the shoe to your clothes, just match them to your hair! Super easy. Along with a nude shoe which is also a versatile wardrobe staple, your hair colour shoe is going to prove to be a winner.
I see so many wardrobes of black shoes (yes they are easy to buy and yes blending your black shoes to your black pants will make your legs look longer) but I really hope you’re not always wearing black so need other shoe colours to work with your outfits.
You can always blend shoes to your pants – which is why I love these grey boots as they work well with my grey jeans as well, to make legs look even longer.
Pretty easy? As long as there is a relationship between shoes and hair colour they don’t have to match exactly (these boots match my darker grey that is around the back ok my head even better).

Love this article and the Shopcasts! Great suggestions for colours and current styles.
What if your hair is a more warm grey/blonde? It seems so hard to find warmer greys so will any grey work?
They are around – they have a slightly greenish, bluish or yellowish look – more taupe than a cool blue-grey
Hi, it’s summer here in the States, and I have seen and recommend for you a pair of silver fabric espadrilles. The silvery sheen would perfectly match your hair. Love!
I agree with you. My hair is white in front and grey in back. I have boots and booties in grey for winter and casual and heeled sandals for summer. I even wear grey athletic shoes for walking. My favorite pair of heeled sandals is a pair of sandals that has both flesh colored straps and grey straps. They go with absolutely anything!!! Of course that does not mean that my husband does not still call me Imelda for the number of pairs of shoes I own.
Hi Imogen
Thanks for all the info sharing, always packed with useful tips.
This article made me wonder, if you can co ordinate to your hair colour can you also match shoes to your eye colour.
Thanks Imogen
You can – but it’s not going to be as effective as unless you have huge eyes or really brightly coloured eyes -it’s a too small proportion to make it obvious about what it’s related to (unless of course you’re wearing an eye coloured top, scarf or statement jewellery.
Hi, does this principle still apply if your hair is dyed fashion colours (ie not a natural colour)? How does this apply id your hair is multiple shades?
Thanks
A
You could potentially use a dominant colour in your hair – or think about multicoloured shoes if you have multicoloured hair
