Seventeen years ago, this August 18th, I sat down at my computer, heart pounding, and pressed “publish” on my very first Inside Out Style Blog post. I had no idea that moment would spark a journey reaching millions of women worldwide, each seeking the same thing: clarity, confidence, and the courage to be seen as their true selves.
Today, as I celebrate 17 years of Inside Out Style, I wanted to pause and write you a love letter – because this blog has always been for you. For the intelligent, thoughtful women who want to feel stylish without compromising who they are. For those who’ve spent years following external dress codes, only to realise they want to dress for themselves.
Why I Started Inside Out Style
When I first began working as an image consultant, I saw a troubling pattern. Brilliant women – professors, teachers, doctors, executives, creatives – came to me feeling both invisible and like failures. Not because they weren’t smart enough, but because fashion advice never spoke their language. It assumed style was innate, frivolous, or dictated by fleeting trends. They blamed their bodies, their weight, and their shape for their self-perceived lack of style.
I started Inside Out Style to change that narrative. I wanted to create a space grounded in logic, psychology, and the science of personal style – where you could learn why something works, not just what to wear, because for me, when I learned this, it changed how I saw myself, my body and improved my self-esteem. Where you could reconnect with your body, your values, and your sense of self-expression, without shame or overwhelm.

I’ve changed over the past 17 years, and I bet you have too, I’ve gotten divorced and remarried, I’ve embraced my grey hair and now I need glasses to read, though one thing remains the same in my life, whippets will always be a part of it!
What I’ve Learned from You Over 17 Years
Over these 17 years, you’ve taught me so much about courage.
- It takes courage to look in the mirror after body changes and ask, “Who am I now, and how do I want to show up in the world?”
- It takes courage to admit that, despite professional success, style still feels like a puzzle no one ever taught you how to solve.
- It takes courage to want more than just “appropriate” or “acceptable” – to want your clothes to feel like you.
I’ve seen the weight of decision fatigue lift from women’s shoulders when they finally understand their colours, their flattering shapes, and how to align their wardrobe with their authentic values. I’ve witnessed tears of relief when they realise their body was never the problem – fashion’s outdated standards were.
I love it when I get to witness first-hand the change in posture when a woman tries on an outfit that is a fabulous expression of who she is at her essence. The shoulders roll back, they grow taller, and they ooze confidence.
Your resilience, intelligence, and desire for self-expression continue to inspire me every single day.
My Promise to You Going Forward

- I promise to keep teaching style as a system grounded in science, psychology, and practicality, not arbitrary rules.

Hi Imogen, Happy Style Anniversary! I discovered your blog in 2018 when I was searching for how to understand what colors and styles worked for me and what didn’t. I was tired of my clothes not looking right and not knowing why. I found your treasure trove of articles and began to read everything in sight. I also purchased 2 of your e-books. Long story short, your advice was so helpful that (3-4 years later) you inspired me to meet face to face with a personal stylist in my area to iron out all the final questions I had. Today, I have a closet that works! I don’t follow fads or trends, I just buy and wear what works for *me*. Thank you! 🙂
Congratulations on 17 years! I found your blog in 2020 COVID lockdown, looking for answers about personal style, which was madness, because we couldn’t go clothes shopping 😂
Reading your posts, your personal colour analysis video and booklet, and doing the EYS program taking outfit photos and getting / giving feedback with like-minded ladies has been so valuable. I know what harmonises with my physicality and resonates with personality. Nowadays I read your blog when you send an email, or I am thinking about purchasing a garment in a particular pattern or colour or silhouette but not sure how it will work, so will come here to search for inspiration or guidance.
Getting dressed everyday is easy, thanks to your generous sharing of knowledge and experience.
I’m going to check out your e books and courses now 😊
Happy anniversary, Imogen! Thanks for the many years of calm, considered guidance and encouragement. As you said, it takes courage to show up in the world, particularly when you’re middle-aged. I feel I can handle just getting dressed in the morning now that I have a color palette that I love and style words to guide me. I appreciate all of your articles and video shorts so much. You inspire us all!
Congratulations on 17 years….that’s quite the accomplishment! I think I have been here for about 15+ years and I cannot remember how I found you. I was probably looking for information on color analysis. I appreciate that as we have aged through the years your information has adapted as well. We are the same age so I relate very well to the changes over the years. I would love to see info on using pieces in multiple ways to make different outfits as I love getting my cost per wear! In addition, I would love advise on staying true to your color palette when the trending colors of the season are out of your color palette.
