I was recently asked by one of my 7 Steps to Style program members to give some tips on how to style a chambray shirt in a more feminine, elegant way. Chambray shirts have long been a wardrobe staple—soft, breathable, and that perfect shade of relaxed blue. But let’s be honest: while they’re incredibly versatile, they can also lean a little too relaxed. And if you’re evolving your style, and trying to elevate your look, you might find yourself wondering…
“Can I wear chambray and still look polished, feminine, and elegant?”
The answer is yes—1000%. But it comes down to how you style it.
Let’s turn that humble chambray shirt from “weekend casual” into “quietly sophisticated” with a few strategic tweaks rooted in the science of style.

1. Elevate With Elegant Bottoms
Chambray naturally has a relaxed, utilitarian vibe—so the easiest way to shift the balance is to contrast that with structure or flow.
Try pairing it with:
-
A silky midi skirt in a soft neutral or rich jewel tone
-
White or cream wide-leg trousers and either tuck in the shirt or knot it at your waist
- White jeans rather than denim for a more elegant look
- A patterned skirt in a luxe fabric like satin or velvet
The soft structure or movement of these pieces adds grace and femininity, instantly upping the elegance factor.
2. Accessorise Like a Grown-Up Goddess
Accessories are your shortcut to refinement. Think of them as the punctuation that gives your outfit tone and meaning.
-
A statement necklace or pearl drop earrings to draw attention upward
-
A structured leather handbag in a sophisticated colour (e.g., burgundy, forest green, soft blush)
-
Elegant ballet flats or heeled sandals rather than sneakers or boots
Even a silk scarf loosely tied around the neck or worn in the hair adds effortless polish.
3. Choose the Right Chambray for Your Colouring
Not all chambray is created equal. Some skews cool, others warm. Some are faded and pale, others have depth and vibrancy.
Your chambray shirt should harmonise with your personal colouring, not fight it. Check out my post here on the undertone of your denim.
If you’ve had a professional colour analysis (especially within the Absolute Colour System), choose a blue that aligns with your colour swatch – which will get you the correct undertone, value, and intensity. That alone can elevate your whole look, because when the colour supports you, you become the focus, not the shirt.
If you’re not sure of your best colours, then investing in a personal colour analysis will help save you from wardrobe mistakes that don’t make you glow.
4. Feminise the Fit
If your shirt is too boxy or oversized, it can swamp your shape—especially as our proportions shift with age. Try one of these instead:
-
A fitted or tailored chambray shirt with darts or princess seams
-
A shirt tied at the waist over a skirt or dress to define your waistline
-
Tucked and bloused into high-waisted pants for a more modern silhouette
It’s all about balance—adding shape, softening structure, and embracing the silhouette you have now.
5. Layer With Intention
Layering can either take your outfit into “farmhand chic” or “Parisian effortless” depending on what you choose.
To enhance elegance, layer with:
-
A white blazer for a clean, crisp finish
-
A longline cardigan in cashmere or merino for softness and flow
-
A sleeveless trench vest for a nod to sophistication and vertical lines
These pieces add depth, interest, and polish—without bulk or busyness.
Use Enclothed Cognition to Boost Confidence
What you wear affects how you feel—this is known as enclothed cognition. When you choose to style your chambray shirt in a way that aligns with your personality and values, it helps you embody that version of yourself who is stylish, confident, and elegant.
This isn’t about pretending to be someone you’re not—it’s about allowing your clothing to support who you already are.
It’s not about trends—it’s about intention.
When you combine the right colour, the right fit, and a few purposeful styling tweaks, you’re not just “wearing a shirt.” You’re expressing who you are—clearly, confidently, and beautifully.
