Just because you wear a bigger size does not mean that you must automatically have a wardrobe full of boring, frumpy sacks. There are a few things that you can do to make sure you look your best.
Quality Matters
It is hard to find stylish clothing in larger sizes. Sometimes the clothes you do find can be boring, ugly or just plain weird. Many plus sized clothes are cut long and baggy and they hang loosely on the hanger creating a poor first impression. This extra fabric adds to the manufacturing cost so often plus sized clothing is made from poor quality materials. You deserve better so make an effort to choose garments that are made of quality materials and fit you properly; this will ensure that you look polished and put-together and your clothes will last longer as well!
Skimming, not clinging
Make sure everything you wear is tailored to your body shape; opt for slightly more fitted items that accentuate your curves in the right way.
Covering your body shape and trying to hide behind your clothes doesn’t help your look at all. On the contrary, it makes everyone aware of the fact that you aren’t comfortable with your body. So avoid large tops, wide tent dresses, and baggy pants that hide your shape and make your body appear larger than it is.
Invest in good underwear. This is a universal style tip. Good underwear is an absolute MUST for every plus-size woman. Make sure your undergarments are giving you adequate support and a smooth line regardless of your size.
Adding structure to your look is another great way to feel stylish and chic. You can try Ponte jackets which are comfortable, soft, and stretchy, but still give you a structured look. You can also opt for blouses with collars or other construction elements rather than knit shirts to give you a more dressed-up look.
Tips for Your Tops
Horizontal lines broaden – so be wary of where they are sitting on your body and how many there are of them.
Horizontal lines should not hit at your widest point – so upper thigh-length tops are generally unflattering if that’s the widest point of your lower body – see image below.
Also, be aware of wide horizontals created by things like tiers and frills – as in the middle image – this just adds additional bulk and width to your frame.
Instead look for curved hems, they make legs look longer and still cover your tummy.
The Power of Illusion
Our aim with our outfits is to remember we are learning how to be a magician, practicing the art of illusion and distraction. Whatever your height, you’ll get a more flattering overall look by creating the illusion of a longer, taller silhouette.
We create the illusions using vertical lines to lengthen and slim horizontal lines to shorten and broaden or to balance. We can use diagonal lines to draw attention. We can like curved lines to soften things down.
You can create a great column of colour by wearing the same color top and bottom such as dark blue jeans wearing a dark blue top. You can put a different color jacket or cardigan or topper over the top. In this example, the dark colors recede and the brighter and lighter colors advance so this makes the topper stand out.
In hotter months, patterned kimono over a dress would work as an alternative to a pants and jacket.
Accessorize!
Accessories add oomph. They show an attitude of confidence and style. Use scarves, jewellery, and other accessories to add some depth to your outfit and make it look more eye-catching. Accessories will also allow you to show off your best assets, while bringing less attention to your less than favourite parts.
Proportion is everything when it comes to accessorizing for plus-sizes. Too big can be overpowering; too small can make you look even bigger. This rule doesn’t always apply to earrings, bracelets and rings but necklaces should vary in size depending on what you are wearing. If you are wearing a busy top, with a lot of prints or embellishments, go smaller and daintier around the neck area. If you have a thick neck, stay away from chokers and small necklaces. Longer chains look good with low-cut tops and chunky, beaded jewellery can jazz up a plain outfit.
Finally, don’t be afraid to experiment with different styles and colours; try out different clothing combinations until you find the perfect match for your preferences and body type. Use your creativity and express yourself and find a style that is all about you, showing your personality and showcasing your best features through originality, confidence, and uniqueness.
With these tips, you’ll be sure to look smart and stylish in your plus-size clothes!
