What’s Your Favourite Mascara?

As mascara is the makeup product that has to be disposed of most frequently (every 3-6 months), it’s the product I’m least faithful to, and like to mix up and try different ones.

L'Oreal Carbon Black Telescopic Dramatic Lengthening and Intensifying Mascara, Carbon Black 935 1 ea
I’ve just started sing L’Oreal Carbon Black which claims to give you a ‘false lash effect’.   I have to say the claims are a little over the top, and it does require multiple coats to achieve much longer, fuller lashes, but that done, they are definitely thicker and longer.  This is what I have as my waterproof mascara (it’s swimming season here at the moment, and I hate panda eyes).  I also wear waterproof mascara when I’m going to the chiropractor, otherwise after lying face down on one of those tables I end up with streaks on my cheeks.

Benefit Cosmetics BADgal Mascara and Waterproof Liner
My non-waterproof one at the moment is Benefit Bad Gal mascara, it doesn’t seem to give me the incredibly long and full lashes I really want, but it does the job OK.

L'Oreal Volume Shocking Mascara - Black
Before this I was using L’Oreal Volume Shocking mascara – which is one of those ones with two ends, you put the white coat on first, then the dark coat.   It definitely built up the volume and length of my lashes, which is great, but the reason I didn’t go with it again is that it annoyed me having to do both ends – am I just too lazy?

Maybelline Define-A-Lash Lengthening Mascara Very Black

Previous to this I was sing Maybelline Define-a-Lash which was really good at separating lashes and making sure there was no clumping.

That’s as far back as I can remember – what is your favourite mascara?

  • Like you, I don't really have a set favorite. I've been playing around with Bare Escentuals' mascara for the past year or so. Currently, I'm using their Flawless Definition Mascara – it's pricey, but I stretch my mascara use out to about 6 months, or until it starts flaking. I like it because it's *not* waterproof and is easy to get off, but it doesn't end up all over my face, either. Plus, the wand is so tiny that I can *really* get great volume if I want to play up my eyes a lot.

  • I've been using Cover Girl Lash Blast lately. Not too clumpy, not flakey, and makes my lashes look good, even when I only have time for 1 coat.

  • Just started using CG Lash Blast after 2 friends recommendations- no clumping like the expensive stuff I was using, no flaking/flecking off. Happy so far…

  • CoverGirl's new Lash Blast Length is great! I have just recently begun curling my eyelashes before applying mascara and I love how they look. I actually may like it better than my Buxom (Bare Escentuals, WAY more $$ than CoverGirl) mascara that I have used for months, now. I really want to try DiorShow… one more Sephora.com visit and I may cave.

  • I keep trying different mascaras and keep returning to Diorshow. It just seems to add the volume and length I like without flaking off. I haven't tried the ones you've listed, will have to give them a whirl.

  • I´m quite faithful to a brand, and I have had Guerlain´s mascara ( wear/wash away) for long now. I just bought Chanel´s mascara, not bad either.

  • I have used Maybelline one in the green and pink tube which was good and also one I was given as a freebie from Estee Lauder or Elizabeth arden! Currently using a Chanel one which is v. good – no clumping which I cannot stand!!

  • I used Stila's for a long time, and really liked it, but then they shut down all their Nordstrom makeup counters and I didn't want to have to order it online. So I switched to Maybelline Volume Express and really liked that for a long time. About 2 months ago I tried the Cover Girl Lash Blast and it's great! Good coverage and volume even with just one coat.

  • I am a total eye lash girl. Lashes are my favorite feature! I try most every thing new that comes on nthe market. But the only mascara that doesn't give me racoon eys, is Lancome Definicils. I switch between black and deep brown, depending on how blonde I am at the moment.

  • Imogen, I would love some advice on mascara for contact wearers. I must rub my eyes a lot without realizing because I've found the stuff ends up on my lenses more often than not. Thanks!

  • What I've been using recently:

Lancome L'Extrême (the waterproof one) – my favorite waterproof – never clumpy, great applicator wand. A bit tough to remove (like most waterproof mascaras) though.

Blinc Kiss Me mascara and eyelash primer – I switched to these products because I needed someting gentler. Very gentle and super easy to remove, but has a tendency to flake/smudge if worn for more than a few hours.

Maybelline INTENSE XXL mascara – Bleccch. Clumpy, lumpy, impossible to remove. Why I haven't just thrown it out yet, I don't know.

I think I may go back to the Lancome product again, now that my eyelashes are growing in again. I've been using Lumigan (Latisse) for about six months now, after I lost almost the center third of my right eyelashes in an eyelash curling mishap last summer. It's worked extremely well for me – my eyelashes are thicker and longer than they've been in years, and the right eyelashes are almost as full again as the left ones.

  • I love, love, love Loreal Telescopic. I use it in both Blackest Black (I think the formula is a little thick and looks great at night) and Carbon Black (thinner formula that defined and lengthens, but looks good for day).

  • I'm a contact lens wearer and have had great success with Physician's Formula Plumping Potion–great applicator, minimal clumps, non-irritating, and it seems to make my lashes healthier! The only con is that because it's not waterproof, any eye-watering will make it run.

  • I ♥ mascara, and I've tried so many different brands and blends that I've forgotten most. Possibly because most of them have been fairly mediocre.
For me, the standouts have been (in no particular order) :

Lancome Hypnose – a really good everyday mascara. Lengthens and thickens very well, but doesn't look OTT. Actually, all of Lancome's mascaras are pretty good.

YSL Faux Cils – now this one is OTT! really goves that "false eyelashes" look (especially after a few coats).

Benefit Badgirl Mascara – This is my current mascara, and I'll definitely be buying another tube when this one runs out. Makes lashes very thick and curly (which is what I need)but only gives a small amount of length. The big brush didn;t bother me at all. Imogen you don't sound all that impressed with this one! I love it – probably more than the Lancome.

  • Without question, the best mascara for lengthening without clumping is
Dior Diorshow Mascara, in black 090! I have tried others just for fun, and I always come back to Diorshow.
